Proposed US federal privacy bill, which would limit ad targeting, 'has legs,' experts say
Briefly

The American Privacy Rights Act (APRA) seeks to establish national standards for consumer data online, mandating companies to collect only necessary data, empower consumers to control their data, and provide options to opt out of targeted advertising.
"This bipartisan, bicameral draft legislation is the best opportunity we've had in decades to establish a national data privacy and security standard that gives people the right to control their personal information ... It strikes a meaningful balance on issues that are critical to moving comprehensive data privacy legislation through Congress," said Senate Commerce Committee Chair Maria Cantwell and House Energy and Commerce Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers.
If enacted, the APRA bill would require affirmative, express consent for transferring personal data to third parties, potentially impacting social media ad networks more than other digital platforms.
