For a dog to be considered truly 'gifted', it must not only remember the names of hundreds of objects but also retain these names for at least two years.
Dr Claudia Fugazza stated, 'We know that dogs can remember events for at least 24 hours and odours for up to one year but this is the first study showing that some talented dogs can remember words for at least two years.'
The researchers found that four out of the five Border Collies remembered the names of 60-75% of the toys after two years, confirming their unique abilities.
Lead researcher Dr Shany Dror emphasized the significance of waiting two years before retesting, indicating the long-term memory capabilities of these gifted dogs.
