"The watchdog said Google should give publishers "meaningful choice" over how their content is used in AI-generated responses; be more transparent about the process; and properly cite content used in AI results."
"Will Hayter, the CMA's executive director for digital markets, said in a blog post that the measures would support the "long-term sustainability" of publishers and "help people verify sources in AI-generated results and build trust in what they see.""
The Competition and Markets Authority proposed that Google give news publishers and content creators the ability to opt out of having their online content scraped for AI Overviews. The CMA reported that AI Overviews have reduced traffic to original news articles by lowering click-through rates. The regulator called for greater transparency about how content is used in AI-generated responses and for proper citation of sources. The CMA also recommended that Google rank search results fairly and avoid prioritizing sites tied to its advertising or commercial deals. Google said it will engage with the regulator and is exploring opt-out controls.
