SoftBank says it will invest up to 75 billion to build French data centers | TechCrunch
SoftBank Group will invest up to €75 billion (about $87 billion) to expand data center capacity in France. The plan targets developing and operating up to 5 gigawatts of additional capacity. The first phase builds data centers in Dunkirk (Loon-Plage), Bosquel, and Bouchain, aiming to supply 3.1 gigawatts to the Hauts-de-France region by 2031. SoftBank calls it its largest AI infrastructure investment in Europe, and it is an investor in and customer of OpenAI. In the U.S., data center opposition is rising due to environmental impacts and concerns about grid effects and utility prices, even as SoftBank plans an Ohio site powered by a new 9.2 gigawatt natural gas plant.
