EU court slaps $216m fine on Hungary for not following asylum laws

European Court of Justice imposed a 200-million-euro fine on Hungary for not following EU asylum laws. Hungary restricted asylum applications to outside its borders and forcibly prevented many from entering.
Hungary failed to comply with ECJ's 2020 judgment on the right of asylum applicants to remain in the country during appeal. ECJ called Hungary's actions a serious infringement of EU law.
