The Red Sox designated infielder Pablo Reyes for assignment as part of adding Cooper to the active 26-man MLB roster. Reyes, capable of playing all four infield positions, had a disappointing season batting .183 with no home runs and will now have to be traded, released, or placed on outright waivers.
Garrett Cooper, acquired in a trade, is expected to fill in at first base for the injured Triston Casas. The 33-year-old veteran, with prior experience as an All-Star and decent hitting stats, brings the potential for regular playing time.
