Saving Houston's LGBTQ history through thousands of hours of radio archives
Briefly

A pair of archivists, Emily Vinson and Bethany Scott, have been working on preserving thousands of hours of LGBTQ radio programs from Houston, shedding light on LGBTQ history not commonly associated with the city.
The programs aired on Houston's Pacifica station, KPFT (90.1), including shows like Wilde n' Stein and After Hours, providing a platform for LGBTQ voices during significant historical events like the AIDS crisis and LGBT civil rights movements.
An interview from a 1979 episode of Wilde n' Stein featured prominent activists reflecting on being Black gay men in Houston, showing the diverse experiences within the LGBTQ community in the city.
The interview with Tony Lazada, a Houston resident and former manager of the Stonewall Inn, highlighted his efforts to run a clean and safe gay bar in Houston, drawing a contrast to the events of the Stonewall riots in New York.
