MILAN -- Canada women's hockey captain Marie-Philip Poulin has been ruled out of her team's preliminary-round game against the U.S. at the Olympics on Tuesday night because of injury. Just about five hours before puck drop, the Canadian Olympic Committee announced Poulin would not play after leaving a win Monday night against Czechia with an undisclosed lower-body injury. Poulin is considered day-to-day.

For decades, the roads to the highest levels of hockey were only available to men. It wasn't until the 1990s that women competed in world championships or at the Olympics, but their events often received less viewership or interest than the men's events. Fast forward to August 2023. The Professional Women's Hockey League was introduced, creating the biggest stage for the highest level of women's hockey in North America. That being said, 2023 was far from long ago.

It's a rivalry as old as time itself. More like a 250 year rivalry? Longer? I don't know. Despite winning gold in women's hockey back in the 2018 Winter Olympics, the United States would once again find themselves in Canada's shadow by the end of the 2022 tournament. To make things even more intense, the United States has had the upper hand against Canada in recent years, dominating the recent four-game Rivalry Series with multi-goal wins in all four games.

Bundle up! The 2026 Winter Olympic Games are just around the corner, and there are a number of LGBTQ+ Olympic stars we'll be cheering on. The Winter Games, running from 6 to 22 February, are taking place in Italy. Hosted jointly by the cities of Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, athletes will be descending on Northern Italy to compete. LGBTQ+ athletes will be arriving in the snowy region with the hopes of making their countries proud, and maybe bringing home a gold medal.

Expansion teams are usually bad because they're contingent on being bad. For narrowing the other teams' slices of the revenue pie, they can join the league only at a high cost and at some competitive disadvantage. If they do fashion something workable from everyone's leftovers, a la the Valkyries or Golden Knights, good for them, but that success wouldn't be by design.
