Gardaí are investigating the death of a woman in her 50s who was found unresponsive at a residential property on Connolly Street, Cavan, shortly after 2am on 7 April 2026. The coroner and the Office of the State Pathologist have been notified, and a post-mortem examination will be arranged.
Human remains found on Bay Area beaches in 1999 and 2023 have been identified as those of Walter Karl Kinney, a banker who disappeared in 1999. The remains were discovered by a family searching for sea shells in 2022, leading to an investigation that linked the remains to Kinney's family through DNA analysis.
Possible human remains were found in the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Thursday night. Police confirmed that the remains were found around 10:30 p.m. near Cross Bay Boulevard along a section of the refuge that connects Howard Beach and Broad Channel.
They were able to recover additional body parts from the water. Those parts appear to have been clean cut. That is, they were severed with a sharp force instrument. We did not recover a full body. The search is continuing for additional body parts, but we were able to make an identification from the body parts that were recovered.
Unlike many murder trials where there are family members sitting in court and hearing the evidence, that didn't happen in this case because the victim's identities were still unknown. Not only had the defendant taken their lives, he had also wiped away their names, leaving family members longing and waiting for decades for answers about their loved ones.
Last year, DNA was sent to Othram, a lab in Texas that specializes in cold cases, where the remains were finally identified. The Coast Guard launched a search and rescue operation in 2006 following Asher's disappearance at Tillamook Bay, on the coast of Oregon, but the search was suspended after just one day. At the time, Coast Guard members found Asher's boat idling in the water with live crab onboard.
