The typhoon, locally known as Tino, made landfall around midnight in the eastern province of Southern Leyte and also hit Cebu, where residents were still reeling from a powerful earthquake that struck the province last month. The typhoon had sustained winds of up to 140 kilometers (87 miles) per hour and gusts of up to 195 kph (121 mph) as of Monday afternoon. Kalmaegi is forecast to move across the Visayas Islands region and out over the South China Sea by Wednesday.

Typhoon Ragasa, one of the strongest in years, whipped waves taller than lampposts onto Hong Kong promenades and turned seas rough on the southern Chinese coast on Wednesday after leaving deadly destruction in Taiwan and the Philippines. In Taiwan, 14 people died in a flooded township, and 10 deaths were reported in the Philippines. Nearly 1.9 million people were relocated across Guangdong province, the southern Chinese economic powerhouse.

A lake burst caused by Super Typhoon Ragasa killed at least 14 people and left 124 others missing in eastern Taiwan, officials said on Wednesday. Taiwan has been hit hard by Ragasa, one of the strongest storms in years, which has already caused deaths in the Philippines and is now lashing Hong Kong. The lake in Hualien County overflowed on Tuesday and sent torrents of mud and water through Guangfu township, inundating villages and sweeping away a major bridge.

The jet, known as Tempest, will act as a symbol of Britain's hopes to remain a top-tier military nation and keep alive more than a century of building military aircraft.
