More than 18,000 vehicles are being used in the UK without proper records of where their owners live, part of an increasing problem of ghost owners who cannot be held accountable for their driving.
The real problem is infrastructure, not vehicle safety. Roadways are open systems with infinite variables—weather, pedestrians, distracted drivers, and aging infrastructure. Communication between vehicles is minimal, and infrastructure is largely silent—and in that gap lies the potential for deadly collisions.
A 47-year-old male driver entered the restricted area of the cable car turnaround and caused damage to the turnaround signal and a protective concrete barrier, but no injuries were reported.
"If we can get more folks off all the roads and their personal vehicles and use the safer service which our stats show, at least in our service in the cities where we operate, we are contributing to less crashes," Anthony Perez, Waymo's northeast policy manager, stated.
"We're looking at quite large new numbers of residents that will be in this part of town. And the decision was made that we need to connect those parts of town across the water to downtown, but that we need to do it in a way that won't increase congestion."

CITYWIDE - THE MTA ON Wednesday issued a notice that Automated Camera Enforcement fines are set to begin on Friday, Feb. 6, on the B68, B60 and M57 bus routes. Vehicles caught improperly using busways and bus lanes, blocking bus stops or illegally double parked will receive summonses that start at $50 and escalate to $250 for repeat violators. Bus routes with automated enforcement on average have increased speeds by 5%, with some corridors seeing gains as high as 30%, according to the authority.
