Wait times at security checkpoints have plummeted at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, which was one of the hardest hit by Transportation Security Administration staffing shortages. While last week it warned passengers of four-hour lines, its website listed waits of less than five minutes at all checkpoints just after 6:20 a.m. ET.
The module is part of the National Aviation Passenger Allocation Model, or NAPAM, which forecasts passenger airport choices. It consists of about 10,000 lines of code written in a Microsoft .NET C++ environment with Excel used for data input and output. It carries out iterative calculations until these hit a set value such as an airport's maximum number of passengers.
Heathrow's annual sustainability report summarizing the year 2025 describes climate change as "an existential threat to aviation, to the planet and to us all personally." The report touts a few areas of interest, including adding zero-emission buses to the airport's fleet and reducing overall waste at Heathrow by 3%. The report also points to Heathrow using more sustainable jet fuel, with 3.1% of the flights taking off from the airport making use of such materials.
Glasgow Central station remains closed following a significant fire in a shop next to the station on Union Street. The fire began on Sunday in buildings at Glasgow Central Station and burned through the night and caused part of the building to collapse.
United Airlines Flight 2127 had departed LAX for Newark when one of the engines caught fire. Video from the scene shows the Boeing 787 stopped on the runway as smoke poured from its left engine, and evacuation slides were deployed. Passengers can be seen running away from the aircraft while emergency vehicles surrounded the plane.
We were told it would leave several times shortly, but nothing happened. People were exhausted and worried about what was going on. The aircraft never left the runway, and passengers were eventually disembarked after hours of waiting.
Gate changes, especially those sprung on travellers at the last minute, are a real pain point in air travel. The primary drivers are usually a last-minute aircraft swap due to a mechanical issue or an unexpected delay on an inbound flight occupying the planned gate.
Rising demand for services has led an NHS trust serving Suffolk and Essex to declare a critical incident. East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust told the BBC it was facing "significant pressure", including hospitals in Ipswich and Colchester. Earlier this month, the NHS reported a rise in flu and other winter viruses after Christmas. The trust has encouraged people to seek help from pharmacists or use NHS 111 where appropriate.
LFB Dozens of firefighters have extinguished a fire in the basement of a data centre in east London. London Fire Brigade (LFB) said around 60 firefighters and eight fire engines were called to Nutmeg Lane, Blackwall at 04:50 GMT on Saturday. The fire broke out in a battery room containing lead-acid batteries and was brought under control before 07:00. The cause of the blaze has not been determined.
According to CNT, Gatwick's main issue is essentially that it punches above its weight. Despite being the second busiest airport in the country, it only has one runway, which means that congestion and bottlenecks are not uncommon. There's pressure to have everything running smoothly, which is basically impossible because one small hiccough can 'ripple quickly across schedules' and cause widespread disruption.
Air Canada Rouge Flight 1502 was taxiing toward the runway at Toronto Pearson International Airport when Caron noticed flight attendants frantically running down the aisle of the cabin. The plane eventually came to a halt before reaching the runway and Caron looked out the window. We could see the crew gathering around the plane, so we knew something was happening, she said. Then, the pilot tells us that there is someone from the crew in the luggage hold.
