The U.S. Department of Justice reached a settlement in the lawsuit filed last April by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees union and the American Library Association, agreeing to leave IMLS intact and allowing it to continue its work supporting libraries and museums across the country.

Police data revealed that approximately 1,300 cases of bodily harm were recorded at schools in 2024, a significant increase from the 700 to 1,000 cases reported in previous years.

As part of the newly created Admissions and Consumer Transparency Supplement (ACTS) survey, colleges must submit years of disaggregated admissions data-including the test scores, grade point averages, race, sex and income ranges of applied, admitted and enrolled students dating as far back as 2019. The data collection is part of an effort to verify that universities aren't considering race in admissions decisions after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the use of such practices in 2023.

The Palo Alto Unified School District is in the middle of at least 11 different lawsuits, including cases that allege unchecked bullying, racist attacks, injured students, inadequate special education and retaliation by district leadership.

Parents of students at the TIDE Academy magnet school are asking a judge to stop the Sequoia Union High School District from closing the school at 150 Jefferson Drive in Menlo Park. Parents allege in the federal court suit that the district is discriminating against children with disabilities by closing TIDE. The district's school board voted unanimously Feb. 4 to close TIDE due to a tight budget. "Closing TIDE disproportionately burdens the disabled community," the suit states.

The case began on Jan. 28, 2022 when the school district got an email alleging Colombo had raped a middle school student in the 2001-02 school year, according to a narrative by a judge in the case. The school district reported the email to police and put Colombo on paid administrative leave. On June 15, 2022, the District Attorney's Office charged Colombo with felony aggravated sexual assault of a child.

Teachers have almost no authority over student behaviors or academic grading, and are given little, if any, respect from administrators, parents or even students. Instead, students have all the authority but no responsibility for their success. Students do (or don't do) whatever they wish, while empty-handed teachers are left to take the blame. Teachers no longer have the ultimate tool of flunking students.

A group of students who are eager to learn about advanced math are asking for multivariable calculus, and teacher Daniel Nguyen has obtained a master's degree in order to teach it. The school board told Paly to add the class on Dec. 16, but the teachers council said no. Apparently the school is run by a committee of teachers, called the council of administrators and instructors, who oppose adding the class.
