The Guardians shut out the Braves 6-0, showcasing a strong performance with key contributions from José Ramírez and Parker Messick.
Carlos Acuna, building upon his outstanding freshman season, threw a one-hit shutout on Friday in Birmingham's 5-0 West Valley League win over Taft. He lost his no-hit bid when the first hitter of the seventh inning singled. He finished with seven strikeouts.
In an unbelievable display of "bend-don't-break" pitching, the Kentucky staff allowed St. John's to put runners on base in eight of the nine innings and still walked away with a shutout. That is incredibly hard to do. Between Friday's Jaxon Jelkin gem and Saturday's bulldog of an effort, the Cats have now allowed just one unearned run in 18 innings against the Red Storm.
David Rittich made sure the New York Islanders' return from the holiday break came with a statement. Rittich stopped 27 shots for his ninth career shutout as the New York Islanders beat the New York Rangers 2-0 on Saturday night at UBS Arena, giving the home crowd plenty to celebrate in the latest chapter of the rivalry. "Our goaltender was outstanding," head coach Patrick Roy said. "He was the player of the game in my mind."
On their heels from the start, the Sharks allowed two goals in the first period and three more early in the second including two just nine seconds apart in a 6-0 loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday night at Ball Arena. Sharks starting goalie Yaroslav Askarov has been one of the NHL's best goalies this month, but didn't have much support as he allowed four goals on 19 shots, with the fourth coming by Avalanche defenseman Josh Manson at even strength at the 4:51 mark of the second period.
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Petrides won its seventh game in as many outings and captured the program's 100th career victory with a 51-0 home victory over Tilden Saturday afternoon in a PSAL 1A Conference encounter. Aiden Gonzalez and Elias Hardt scored two touchdowns apiece in the rout. If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
Miami made three errors in the second as Detroit scored twice. With Spencer Torkelson on first, Colt Keith's grounder to first went off Wagaman for the first error. Second baseman Máximo Acosta retrieved the ball in foul territory and threw wildly past third. Left fielder Troy Johnston tried to run down the ball but it bounced off a fence, through his legs and past as Keith reached third. Keith scored on Dillon Dingler's single.
Since returning from the IL, Blake Snell has had a sub-2 ERA, but today was his first blip. Early on he was doing his usual thing, as after a one-out walk in the 1st, there was a wild pitch and stolen base with two outs, but nothing to worry about. He rebounded with a seven-pitch 2nd, and then worked around a two-out walk and wild pitch in the 3rd. The 4th was eventful, as it started with a Teoscar Hernandez sliding catch that was ruled a double at first before being reversed.
The tough stretch of series for the Dodgers continued tonight against the Reds, and they got their ace Hunter Greene to start, but the Dodgers were up to the challenge. Specifically, was, as he smashed two homers to provide a lead for Emmet Sheehan, who twirled seven shutout frames while striking out 10 batters as they cruised to a 7-0 opening game victory.
