ICEs between Berlin and Hamburg via Stendal, Salzwedel and Uelzen are cancelled. ICEs between Hamburg and Munich via Berlin, Leipzig, Erfurt and Nuremberg are cancelled between Hamburg and Berlin. Fraudsters are quick to exploit uncertainty and the travel disruption caused by the conflict in the Middle East is no exception. We're already seeing criminals target people seeking refunds for booked travel and holidays, sending them a link to supposedly receive a refund but instead people's accounts are being charged.
"Fuel surcharges are not a stranger to the cruise industry," says Leslie Fambrini, a travel specialist. This indicates that such fees have been previously implemented and are part of the industry's pricing strategies.
We've seen from previous strikes just how significant the impact can be on hospitality businesses, with bookings dropping by 67%. With another wave of strikes looming this Spring, operators should expect disruption well before the strike day itself, as uncertainty around travel plans affects spontaneous visits and last-minute bookings.
For cruise lines, fuel is one of the single largest operating expenses. But not all three major operators are equally exposed. Carnival does not hedge its fuel purchases. That means every dollar oil climbs hits Carnival's margins directly, with no buffer. Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line both have fuel hedges in place, which is exactly why they are holding up comparatively better today.
Airspace across several parts of the Middle East continues to be restricted after the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran, prompting retaliatory attacks and widespread aviation disruption. Gulf states, including the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain, introduced temporary airspace restrictions, while Iran, Israel and Iraq imposed closures or operational limits.
Thousands of flights were canceled across the region following the US-Israel attack on Iran on February 28 and subsequent retaliatory strikes. While some flights have resumed and many travelers who got stranded in places like Abu Dhabi and Doha have made it out, the travel disruptions are ongoing.
In situations like this, airspace closures can be announced through NOTAMs with only hours of notice. Airlines and passengers often find out at roughly the same time. Even when routes reopen, aircraft may no longer follow the same paths they originally did. Airlines may be required to detour around restricted airspace, extend flight paths, or reroute aircraft through different hubs.
According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the global average price of jet fuel jumped 58.4% week-on-week to $157.41 a barrel, far above the $88 average the industry had expected for 2026.
Air travel is showing more signs of recovery after Winter Storm Fern pummelled the country over the weekend. There were around 1,300 canceled flights within, into, or out of the US as of 6:20 a.m. ET on Tuesday, according to data from FlightAware. Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport led the charge with 276, followed by Charlotte Douglas with 138. While more flights are likely to be canceled throughout the day, there were about 4,000 such cancellations early on Monday. The day ended with 6,250 canceled flights, per FlightAware. That compares to Sunday's 11,618 canceled flights.
Passengers can be removed from a flight for disruptive, violent, or aggressive behavior, making threats, or interfering with a crew member's ability to perform their duties. Once a passenger refuses instructions, escalates a confrontation, or distracts the crew during boarding or taxi, airlines have little flexibility because it becomes a safety issue. That stance is backed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which maintains a zero-tolerance policy for unruly or dangerous behavior, meaning passengers who interfere with crew duties can face removal, fines, or further action.
