Rowynn Dumont, a curator, painter, photographer and writer, lived in about 25 places around the world before settling in New York in 2017. It's where my community and the art world infrastructure already were, said Dumont. Exhibits in Union Square, the Flatiron District, Long Island City and the Lower East Side featured her work. She also co-founded a popular monthly new wave dance party, Black Rainbow, on the Lower East Side that would go until 10am.

"We've worked so hard for this. We've been doing this for 20 years. We have to fight to keep this place open - it's what we love to do,"

These findings underscore the depth and breadth of the housing crisis, which is increasingly pricing out working families across the country regardless of geography or profession, said David M. Dworkin, president and CEO of the National Housing Conference. The housing affordability crisis is now hitting families in every metro area, for nearly every occupation. The analysis of 390 metropolitan areas found that nearly one-third now require double the income needed just six years ago to purchase a home.

Franklin Corner Cafe, a staple in Greenpoint for 17 years, is closing its doors on August 4, as the landlord did not renew the lease.

"I was waiting for the shoe to drop. I knew four and half years ago that the landlord was looking for a new tenant [who could pay more rent]."
