Due to injuries, the New York Jets are reaching to the bottom of their quarterback depth chart, tapping rookie Brady Cook to start Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars at EverBank Stadium. It will be the first NFL start for Cook, a former practice-squad player who made his debut last week in a 34-10 loss to the Miami Dolphins. He replaced Tyrod Taylor, who lasted only two series because of a groin injury. Former starter Justin Fields also is injured (knee soreness), leaving the Jets no choice but to use Cook and Adrian Martinez as their two quarterbacks in Jacksonville.
This was projected to be the perfect running mate for second-team All-Pro wideout Terry McLaurin, giving quarterback Jayden Daniels a legitimate 1-2 punch to depend upon deep into the playoffs. That hasn't happened. McLaurin has been seldom seen due to injury. Daniels has played only six games and could be out for even longer with a dislocated elbow. Samuel, who was criticized for his conditioning and injury issues after the trade, has been the constant, missing just one game.
Dean Herrington said he has been let go as football coach at St. Francis after five seasons during which his teams won three league championships and made two Southern Section finals. The team went 2-8 this season and failed to make the playoffs in a season in which there were numerous injuries at the quarterback position. St. Francis ended the regular season with a stunning 28-21 win over Cathedral.
