The City of Providence released 20 minutes of body camera footage showing the initial police response to the fatal mass shooting at Brown University in December, which claimed two lives. The video, which included multiple video and audio redactions, was part of a public records request that included the Providence Police Department's incident report and the Providence Fire Department's call log.

Berkeley Police Chief Jennifer Louis said the change was necessary to align with state and federal privacy requirements, protect officers when on duty and prevent potential suspects from evading arrest. Having considered alternatives, Louis said switching between encrypted and unencrypted channels would be challenging given a dispatch staffing shortage and delaying the feed or creating a key or workaround for media would not solve the issue of protecting sensitive information, as required by a 2020 memo from former California Attorney General Xavier Becerra.

Beginning 4:00 am Wednesday, the Oakland Police Department will be removing the public's access to its radio communications for the first time in more than 100 years. This raises concerns about transparency and accountability since the department has been marred with scandals over the past few decades.
