The Washington Capitals hosted the New York Islanders at Capital One Arena on Wednesday night and it wasn't the prettiest hockey game in the world.Just two total goals between the two sides in regulation brought things to overtime and eventually a shootout which New York prevailed in.At least the OT period was fun.

It only took nearly the entire season, but the New York Islanders finally won a game in the shootout!!This was a pretty boring game for the first two periods, but the action picked up in the third and especially in overtime.Pierre Engvall scored the only regulation goal for the Islanders, and Ilya Sorokin was once again stellar, keeping the Islanders in it as the Capitals mostly controlled the game for the first forty minutes.

The countdown to NHL trade deadline day has begun, and with 36 days remaining, many eyes are on what the Maple Leafs could do to boost their chances of making it past the first round.Last week, DailyFaceoff's Frank Seravalli joined Nick Alberga and Jay Rosehill on Leafs Morning Take to discuss what Toronto might do trade wise before the March 3rd deadline.

The Maple Leafs are likely to add some kind of player between now and the NHL trade deadline on March 3.The first question shouldn't be who, but how much can they spend.Leaving aside the issue of the draft picks and players a team has to give up to get a player in trade - and pay for salary retention on top of that, doubled up perhaps - the cap space has to exist to add the player to the roster.

I'm looking forward to tonight's measuring stick game against the New York Rangers.I have a long memory..still remember December 15 th in New York when Jimmy Vesey (out of all players) stuck it to his former team.Well, tonight, the Leafs have a chance to avenge that game and loss when they host the New York Rangers for game two of five on their homestand.

To quote Mighty Ducks: D2, that wasn't a win, that was a statement.Mitch Marner notched two assists to extend his point streak to 23 games and Ilya Samsonov made 28 stops for his second straight shutout as Toronto smoked Anaheim 7-0.In fact, the Leafs, who extended their team point streak to 15 games (12-0-3), have now blanked their opponent in three of the past four outings.

The Leafs dropped their second straight game in an electric battle between two of the top teams in the league.Boston took this one 4-3 ending a four game losing streak against Toronto.Below are the highlights of the game...
