The big news in the NHL last night was the frustrating continuation of franchises being born on 3rd base thinking they hit a triple: The Chicago Blackhawks, who just ignominously completed a decade of generational draft fortune to the tune of three Stanley Cups - despite multiple management missteps and near-criminal negligence - by tanking without shame, have just won the draft lottery for the NHL's next generational player.

Lots and lots of thoughts and reflections came from the New York Islanders clean-out day, when players - but not coaches nor management - were made available to media.Unless major changes are afoot, presumably Lou Lamoriello and Lane Lambert will be made available this week after everyone aligns on messaging.

The Washington Capitals hosted the New York Islanders for some late-season Metropolitan Division action on Wednesday night.The Caps could play spoiler a bit for the Isles down the stretch as they have one more scheduled matchup after this one and the Isles' lead on the first wild-card playoff spot in the East is just three points.

The New York Islanders ended a bright week with a disappointing thud, losing 5-1 on home ice to the Washington Capitals, ostensible rivals for wild card slots in the East.Standings-wise, it was a costly weekend for the Isles, as two Penguins victories combined with the regulation loss to the Caps helped Pittsburgh leap them to the first wild card spot by two points, and with two games in hand.

The Washington Capitals made the trip up to Long Island for their second matchup of the season with the New York Islanders.The Isles are amid a fierce battle for a Wild Card playoff spot in the Eastern Conference and the Caps were looking to throw a big ole wrench into that discussion.Pierre Engvall kicked off the scoring with a bad bounce off Alex Alexeyev.

ELMONT Kyle Palmieri recorded two goals and an assist, including the game-winning tally against his former team, and Ilya Sorokin made 30 saves as the New York Islanders defeated the New Jersey Devils 5-1 on Monday night at UBS Arena.With the two vital points, the Islanders (38-28-9, 85 points) extend their lead for the No. 1 Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference to three points ahead of the idle Pittsburgh Penguins, who now have two games in hand.

Granted there are more important things about tonight, but could there be a more coveted bobblehead than Butch Goring and his classic bucket?I'm no bobblehead collector, but I imagine it doesn't get any better than that absolute beauty.Goring, a Conn Smythe winner and full dynasty member whose #91 hangs from the rafters, is the latest legend honored as part of the Islanders' 50th anniversary season.

Well, he's using every second he has in advance of the deadline to make moves (and more moves) in hopes of improving the team and finally breaking through in the playoffs.After trading Rasmus Sandin for Erik Gustafsson and a 2023 first-round pick that originally belonged to the Boston Bruins, Dubas kept the train rolling on Tuesday:

Kyle Dubas continued to wheel and deal on Tuesday afternoon, recouping a (very late) first-round pick in 2023 (via Boston) and adding veteran defenseman Erik Gustafsson from Washington in exchange for Rasmus Sandin.A 30-year-old left-hander, Gustafsson is a highly mobile, puck-moving defenseman with a heavy shot who is currently top 20 in the NHL in points among defensemen with 38 in 61 games and is 12th among NHL defensemen in five-on-five points with 23 in 61 games.

The New York Islanders have already made their big splash this trade season, but they made a deal on Tuesday that should not be overlooked.For several seasons, New York has made its living on defense, flustering even the NHL's most prolific offenses.The problem is that the Isles have not been able to score enough goals to contend for a championship.

The Washington Capitals acquired defenseman Rasmus Sandin from the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday afternoon in exchange for Erik Gustafsson and a first-round pick.Sandin represents an savvy pickup as the Capitals try to go younger and re-tool on the fly.Sandin is now one of three defensemen signed for next season, including John Carlson and Nick Jensen.

Toronto, who improved to 20-7-6 overall, is now 1-0-1 against Tampa this season and have picked up three of a possible four points.

To quote Mighty Ducks: D2, that wasn't a win, that was a statement.Mitch Marner notched two assists to extend his point streak to 23 games and Ilya Samsonov made 28 stops for his second straight shutout as Toronto smoked Anaheim 7-0.In fact, the Leafs, who extended their team point streak to 15 games (12-0-3), have now blanked their opponent in three of the past four outings.
