The process of applying for charitable status is challenging, and especially so for open source organizations, which frequently receive denials. Working together with our attorneys, we prepared an application that explained what Typelevel does and why this work is charitable, citing the unique innovations of our projects, our participation in conferences and mentoring programs, and our commitment to open collaboration.
Free open source software is fundamentally broken. In 2023, Denis Pushkarev, maintainer of the widely used core-js library, vented his frustration with the fact that users of his software seldom offer financial support, highlighting the disconnect between widespread dependency on open source and inadequate financial compensation for developers maintaining critical infrastructure.
We're excited to announce that Typelevel has been chosen as a recipient of the 2024 Spotify FOSS Fund! As a result, Spotify has donated €20,000 to Typelevel's OpenCollective. Our current funding goes towards recurring infrastructure expenses, and sending members of our code of conduct committee for training to better support our community. With these extra funds we'd like to expand our initiatives to encourage and support new contributors and users!
A coalition of heavyweight open source foundations issued a joint statement via the foundation on Tuesday, declaring that "open infrastructure is not free" and warning that the critical machinery behind modern software development is being stretched to breaking point. Package registries like Maven Central, PyPI, crates.io, npm, and Packagist handle billions of downloads every month, yet the organizations running them are often scraping by on donations, grants, and the goodwill of a few sponsors.
