The large volume of abdominal computed tomography (CT) scans coupled with the shortage of radiologists have intensified the need for automated medical image analysis tools. Previous state-of-the-art approaches for automated analysis leverage vision-language models (VLMs) that jointly model images and radiology reports.
Recently, AI decided that a painting long thought to be a copy of Caravaggio's The Lute Player is actually by the master, while another version of the same subject, previously thought to be authentic, is not. Both conclusions were disputed by the former Metropolitan Museum of Art curator Keith Christiansen. A similar debate erupted in March 2025 when AI declared that portions of The Bath of Diana, also long believed to be a copy, could have been painted by Peter Paul Rubens.
There are two types of grants that U.S.-based organizations can apply for: Accelerator Grants for those who are already leveraging our AI glasses to scale their impact, and Catalyst Grants for organizations proposing new, high-impact applications using our Device Access Toolkit. We will award 15 Accelerator Grants of $25,000 and 10 of $50,000 USD, depending on the scale of the project. We'll also award five Catalyst Grants of $200,000. In total, we'll grant nearly $2 million to more than 30 organizations and developers.
According to the latest edition of Gurman's Power On newsletter, the Cupertino-based tech giant is working on its AI visual models to enable the Visual Intelligence features on the rumoured AI pendant, AI smart glasses, and AirPods model with cameras. This will enable the wearables to provide environment-based answers to users and take context-based actions. Gurman adds that Apple intends to make Visual Intelligence and visual models integral to its upcoming wearables.
When a scientist feeds a data set into a bot and says "give me hypotheses to test", they are asking the bot to be the creator, not a creative partner. Humans tend to defer to ideas produced by bots, assuming that the bot's knowledge exceeds their own. And, when they do, they end up exploring fewer avenues for possible solutions to their problem.
One scientist at MIT, Cyrus Clarke, is working to do just that. Alongside a team of fellow researchers, Clarke has developed a physical machine called the Anemoia Device, which uses a generative AI model to analyze an archival photograph, describe it in a short sentence, and, following the user's own inputs, convert that description into a unique fragrance. The word "anemoia" was coined by author John Koenig and included in his 2021 book, The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows.
