The Atlantic Ocean's circulation system, known as the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), is at risk of shutting down within a century due to climate change.
If AMOC shuts down, it could lead to severe and cascading global consequences, including dramatic drops in temperature for entire continents.
Global warming and the melting of ice sheets and glaciers could disrupt AMOC by diluting the density of the ocean's salty water, causing the conveyor belt of heat to North America and Europe to weaken. [ more ]
