Historic Architecture Emerges from Stone in Matthew Simmonds Ethereal Sculptures

From unassuming hunks of Carrara marble and limestone, Matthew Simmonds carves realistic, miniature gothic cathedral arches, stairwells, and colonnades. Often based on architectural details of real places, such as cities around Tuscany and Germany's Bamberg Cathedral, the sculptures portray intimate details of corners, vaulted ceilings, arcades, and stairwells that can sometimes be peeked through additional apertures.

Myriam Jacob-Allard appears through a heavy door and greets us with an easy warmth, scooping us up and welcoming us into her world. We are immediately absorbed by an unexpected color-drenched stairwell. We turn into a long hallway whose fragrant freshly waxed floor catches the light, reflecting it back upward so that the corridor seems to glow beneath our feet.

Luftwerk Transforms Paint and Aluminum into Radiant Explorations of Sunlight

Topped with a roof shaped like a crabshell, Le Corbusier's Chapelle Notre-Dame-du-Haut is a sanctuary amid the French mountainside. The 1955 construction rests atop a hill in Ronchamp, standing unobstructed by the otherwise forested inclines. As the sun rises and falls, light filters in through the mélange of rectangular windows tinted to cast streams of color around the space. The stained glass apertures of Le Corbusier's modernist chapel are a clear reference point for Luftwerk's "Open Frame."

Regina Silveira Pieces Together an Evolving Narrative of Latin America

Regina Silveira has spent the better part of three decades considering the relationship between media and meaning, particularly as it relates to Latin America. First presented in 1997, "To Be Continued..." features 100 black-and-white reproductions of photos, newspaper clippings, propaganda, advertisements, and more. Silveira nests each image into an oversized puzzle piece, which cuts off faces and scenes to leave fragments of pop culture icons, flora and fauna, and even the occasional mugshot spliced next to one another.

Denmark exhibition invites visitors to come face to face with Basquiat's 'head' works

When a 22-year-old Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-88) was asked how he typically began a piece, his answer was simple: "I suppose I would start with a head." That instinct-almost a reflex-sits at the core of a remarkable group of early works on paper that remained largely unseen during his lifetime. The Basquiat: Headstrong exhibition, which opens this month at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark, is set to become the first comprehensive showing devoted to the artist's depictions of the human head.
