The knowledge worker became the engine of prosperity, and management became the social technology that synchronized millions of minds. The modern firm was as much an invention as the transistor it depended on. Three decades later, Tom Peters caught the next wave.

A survey from Adaptavist has revealed that 64% of knowledge workers have had their lives negatively impacted by technology in the last year. Three-in-ten said they regularly experience digital overwhelm, and 41% suffer stress and anxiety from notification overload and platform juggling. Almost a quarter (21%) looked for a new job, and 5% quit as a direct result. Many UK knowledge workers are also experiencing stress and anxiety as a result of pressure to be connected outside of working hours - 19%.

AI technologies can enhance as well as impede the performance of knowledge workers. They can boost productivity for routine tasks but might introduce bottlenecks and errors in more-complex tasks.

Only 7.2% of teams rate their AI strategy as "super effective" with strong ROI. 91% of workers use just 1-4 AI tools weekly, despite companies investing in dozens.
