Kinngait, a hamlet in the Arctic north of Canada, is home to a thriving artist cooperative and challenging conditions for artists.
Shuvinai Ashoona, a celebrated Inuit artist from Kinngait, draws imaginative and fantastical interpretations of the Arctic landscape, inspired by her childhood experiences.
Ashoona's artwork features polar bears, whales, walruses, and seals with fantastical twists, such as luminescent fish on ice and giant squid with human faces for eyes. [ more ]
