The New York City Council voted to override Mayor Eric Adams' vetoes of two bills, one banning solitary confinement in city jails and the other requiring police to record lower-level investigative stops of civilians.
Lawmakers argue that solitary confinement is cruel and torturous and leads to heightened risks of injury or death for people in custody, while the mayor and the labor union representing jail guards argue that the ban would make it more difficult to protect workers and detainees. [ more ]
