On Halloween Eve, teams of New York City architects will go "gourd-to-gourd" to create the most impressive work of pumpkin architecture in hopes of winning the Pritzkerpumpkin Prize! Does anyone want to actually build a snowman, Martin, a 28-year-old comedian, said, recalling a friend's social media post. And I swiped up immediately, and I said, 'Yes.' After spending two hours at Bushwick's Maria Hernandez Park, Martin constructed what she called Snow Ma'am Eve, a snow woman with an exaggerated skirt, large bust and chiseled arms. The process, she said, restored a sense of childlike whimsy and joy.
The British artist Andy Goldsworthy moved to Penpont, a village in southwest Scotland, in 1986, when he was thirty. The area's initial appeal was twofold. Property was cheap, which meant that Goldsworthy and his wife at the time, Judith Gregson, could acquire an unrenovated stone building that had likely once stored grain. This structure could serve as a workspace and, for a while, as a rough-and-ready home.
Macken began the project in 2004 and stuck with it for the next 21 years, quietly recreating the five boroughs by hand in his upstate New York home. Built from everyday materials like balsa wood, cardboard and glue, the finished model measures roughly 50 by 27 feet and is made up of more than 300 individual sections. It captures the city's skyline, neighborhoods and landmarks with obsessive detail, from Midtown towers to outer-borough blocks.
Sure, those festive holiday lightshave officially burnt out, but that doesn't mean things have to be dark and dreary this winter: the Union Square Partnership (USP) is graciously adding some light and liveliness to the darkest time of the year with its new interactive art installation, "Patterned Behavior" by MASARY Studios, on view every evening (dusk to 10pm) from now through Tuesday, February 17.
