Apparently, it's always Friday at the Home Depot. Or at least, the Home Depot Black Friday deals have slipped all customary bounds of the calendar: Online deals started November 5 and will go all the way to December 3. This includes some very steep discounts on flagship tool brands like Milwaukee, Ryobi, and DeWalt toolsby which I mean half-off and buy-one-get-one steep. Seemingly half the store is on sale.

"R unpacking items from a box," read one notification from the Nest camera on a shelf in the kitchen. "Jenni cuts a pie / B walks into the kitchen, washes dishes in the sink / Jenni gets a drink from the refrigerator," it continued. Sometimes, the alerts sounded like the start of a joke, "A dog, a person, and two cats walk into the room / Two chickens walk across the patio."

Even if you don't go looking for AI bots, they're being integrated into virtually every product and service. And for what? There's a lot of hand-wavey chatter about agentic this and AGI that, but what can "gen AI" do for you right now? Gemini for Home is Google's latest attempt to make this technology useful, integrating Gemini with the smart home devices people already have.

I have bad news for ecosystem straddlers who use Google Nest products in their smart homes but rely on iPhones and Apple Home for control: the much-loved Starling Home Hub has been discontinued. In a message on its website, Starling said it can no longer manufacture the hub due to "rapidly rising costs of doing business for small US-based product companies like us (most significantly, tariffs the US government charges us to obtain the components we need to build our product)."
