Around the Empire: Yankees news - 6/18/2023

New York Post | Angela Barbuti: Sometimes it doesn't make sense that Nestor Cortes is even an MLB pitcher, but you don't know how deep that runs.Nestor's dad was arrested trying to flee Cuba in 1991, and only met the woman who would become Cortes' mother after serving a prison term.Had Nestor Cortes Sr. successfully defected to the United States, who knows what would have become of his family life, but one way or the other that failed escape attempt paved the way for Nestor Cortes, Yankee pitcher.

Yankees Rivalry Roundup: Rays hold off Padres, Orioles crushed by Cubs

Friday night was, uh, less than ideal for the Yankees.Domingo Germán struggled on the mound and before you know it, the Yankees had allowed 10 runs to the Red Sox through three innings.Needless to say, a comeback was not on the cards after that.Taking a blowout loss to Boston is always bad enough, but let's check in on the Yankees' rivals and see if they added to the misery on Friday night.

Today on Pinstripe Alley - 6/11/23

The first New York-Boston matchup of the season has been fittingly tight. The series opener on Friday night was a 3-2 Red Sox victory, one in which Anthony Volpe came within a few feet of walking things off in favor of the home team.Yesterday was another close affair, with a semi-surprising Domingo Germán/Tanner Houck pitchers duel emerging in a Yankee win.

Today on Pinstripe Alley - 6/10/23

I was on recap duty last night as well in addition to editing, so I'm not going to fully rehash everything. But boy, was that a frustrating L that the Yankees could have won if things were going better right now.Alas, that is not the universe we're living in and it turned into a one-run loss. The Yankees rarely seem to click without Aaron Judge, but they're going to have to figure something because I don't think this toe injury is going to be as quick a turnaround as the hip strain earlier in 2023.

Yankees Rivalry Roundup: Rays rally to split Fenway doubleheader

Other than Gerrit Cole cramping up after the sixth, the Yankees couldn't ask for a much more encouraging win last night at Dodger Stadium. They got contributions from the familiar (Aaron Judge, who homered and made a terrific catch), unfamiliar (Jake Bauers, who clubbed two homers), and fresh from the airport (Oswaldo Cabrera, who went deep as well).

Giants @ Dodgers Gamethread

Well, well, well. After winning perhaps the most bland, boring, and normal baseball game I've ever watched on Friday night, the San Francisco Giants are a game away from winning their fifth straight road series. And perhaps more importantly and impressively, with a win over the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight, the Giants would pull within half a game of their rivals in the standings.

Dodgers News: Emmet Sheehan's Future with Team Revealed by Dave Roberts

Friday night was another loss in a long line of frustration coming from the Dodgers this season. The pitching, especially the bullpen, has been uncharacteristically poor and has caused the team to drop quite a few games that they should have won. However, the story of the game wasn't just the team blowing a 4-0 lead to the rival San Francisco Giants but rather, the story of how rookie pitcher Emmet Sheehan shut down San Francisco while making his Major League debut.

Acceptance or Something Close to It

I don't like being mad at the Mets. They're an important part of my life - while I'm not as doctrinaire about it as I was in the not so distant past, it's odd for me not to see or hear every pitch, and decidedly rare for a game to go in the books wholly unglimpsed by me.(The last one, though? It was Friday night.

Next Victim - And It's Not Us

In April, it didn't merit our attention. In April, the Mets were the Mets who were going to make a habit of it.In April, the Mets beat the Padres one game, the A's the next; the A's one game, the Dodgers the next; and the Dodgers one game, the Giants the next.In April, the Mets would finish off one opponent, we'd shout "BRING ON THE NEXT VICTIM!" and the Mets would proceed as if they'd heard us.

The Absence of Pain

On Saturday afternoon in Pittsburgh the Mets ... won a baseball game. That's it.They played a baseball game and it ended with more runs for the Mets than their opponents, so they won. That shouldn't be particularly noteworthy, yet alone breathtaking, yet after the frustrations of Toronto and the horrors of Atlanta and the hungover farce of opening night in Pittsburgh, it felt like quite something indeed.
