The Austin-based indie-pop band lived a whole life between 2005 and 2010. Singer, songwriter, and guitarist Ramesh Srivastava had gone off to college in Scotland and brought back UK influences that were still trendy in the wake of Belle & Sebastian and Camera Obscura: the Smiths, Orange Juice, the C86 tape, Sarah Records.
Natanya tears genres open and rebuilds them in her own image. Her drums swing loose and jazzy over heavy 808s; synths drift dreamily before snapping into gritty guitar riffs. Writing, producing and arranging all her own work, she weaves together neosoul silk, R&B groove, indie edge, and flashes of grunge, all carried by a buttery falsetto that nods to Aaliyah, Amy Winehouse, Janet Jackson and early Destiny's Child.
GO SCREAM AT THEE PARKSIDE, SLATED TO CLOSE IN MARCH Frank's Place was the business located at 1600 17th St in San Francisco before Thee Parkside took over sometime in 2002. The previous occupant was a modest lunch counter that served sandwiches to local shipyard workers. Who would have guessed that the punk rock venue that followed would serve a similar blue-collar function, providing a third space for local bands and entertainers?
Inner Magic is the duo of former Chromatics guitarist Adam Miller and former Smashing Pumpkins guitarist Jeff Schroeder. They met in 2024 and bonded over their love of '80s UK indie legends Felt, krautrock and the Vinnie Vincent Invasion, and then decided they should make music together.
His first albums under his own name, 1995's Earth & Nightfall and 1996's cult classic Ten Days of Blue, were blissful-sounding ambient techno records that took the melodic sensibilities of the local scene to their cosmic extremes. Julianna Barwick and Mary Lattimore have enough in common that it'd be weird if they hadn't worked together. Both grew up in the South and found early inspiration in spiritually rooted musical forms that they could transform with technology.
