Thompson resigned from the U.S. attorney's office in mid-January due to the Department of Justice's handling of the investigation into the killing of Renee Good at the hands of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent. Senior DOJ officials resisted Thompson and other prosecutors' calls to investigate the shooting itself, instead pushing for an investigation into Good's widow. Six federal prosecutors in Minnesota, including Thompson, resigned over the government's lack of scrutiny into the shooting, as did an FBI agent who sought to investigate the ICE officer who killed Good.

It's not just the awe-inspiring neighbors of Minneapolis, who have continued to come out in epic numbers to defend citizens and non-citizens alike from the violence of ICE and other immigration officials, in the wake of the murder of Renee Nicole Good last week. In the last two days, we've seen new defiance even from U.S. Justice Department officials, rebelling against the way the Trump administration is handling the investigation into Good's murder.

Harmeet Dhillon, a right-wing activist picked by Trump to be the Department of Justice's Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division, is one of the more inconspicuously evil forces behind the DOJ's injustice era. Since her nomination in December 2024, she's used her post to go full-send on the president's anti-DEI initiatives, destroy much of the division's former work to uncover instances of unconstitutional policing, and has reconstructed CRT so much so that hundreds of employees left their jobs.
