In a game featuring a starting pitching matchup of Gerrit Cole and Justin Verlander, we got a pretty impressive pitching battle.Through the first six innings, Cole and Verlander were very good, putting up similar lines.Cole allowed one run on four hits in six innings, as he struck out eight batters.
The Yankees didn't come through Tuesday's big win over the Mets without concern.Worry has to be mounting about Luis Severino, who got lit up again and put the Yankees in a big hole.But the offense showed signs of life, with Anthony Volpe and DJ LeMahieu at least hinting that they could be pulling out of slumps.
Given a choice between a bedraggled, ill-mannered win and a jut-jawed, morally inviolate loss, you take the win every time.And the historical record will show that the Mets beat the Yankees Wednesday night, prevailing 4-3 in walkoff fashion in the 10th at Citi Field.But if you were watching, you know that "win" is stretching it.

This game saw a return of the grit and fight that had been missing over the previous few contests.Luis Severino gave the Yankees 6.2 strong innings and looked downright unhittable at times while DJ LeMahieu accounted for two of his team's three runs.Isiah Kiner-Falefa capped off the comeback effort with a walk-off single in the 10th as the Bombers narrowly take the middle game, 3-2, snapping a three-game skid.
Today's matchup was an Apple TV+ exclusive in the big apple.Huge news for those of us who like to know that Rougned Odor had a two percent home run probability in the first, or seeing a camera angle a millimeter away from Trent Grisham's forehead while he argued a called third strike.Anyhow, despite the national broadcast, the Yankees failed to shine very brightly in the spotlight.

The Yankees defense isn't the strength it was last year
Looking back, the 2022 Yankees were a team that, despite its high-performing starting rotation and powerful (albeit inconsistent) lineup, ought to be known primarily for its defensive prowess.No matter how you look at it, their defense was elite: their 129 Defensive Runs Saved led the league by more than 50 runs (the Dodgers came in second with "just" 86), their 7.0 UZR/150 was more than two-thirds of a point better than the second-place Cardinals, and their 23 Outs Above Average ranked fifth.
It's amazing what a series against a Triple-A team can do for an offense's confidence.You still have to go out and win those games, and that's exactly what the Yankees did to Oakland, scoring 28 runs in three days.While I'm not ready to declare the offense "back" quite yet, it's certainly some positive momentum to carry into a critical series against the Rays.
