Happy Monday, San Francisco Giants fans.In case you missed it, Sunday was a glorious day.The Giants broke a frustrating two-game losing streak with a 13-3 win over the Chicago Cubs that featured a pair of home runs from both Joc Pederson and Thairo Estrada, a pair of doubles from Casey Schmitt, and some delightful pitching performances.

With all things considered for the 1998 Yankees, the team was in a "rough" stretch headed in this June clash with the White Sox ... meaning, of course, they had lost two of three.This was unusual for this squad, to be fair, as it was only the third time to this point that they'd lost consecutive games.

On a rare day when Red Sox ace Pedro Martinez didn't have it, the Yankees couldn't capitalize.Andy Pettitte picked an unfortunate day to toss by far his worst start of the season, lasting only 2.2 innings while giving up eight runs on six hits.The Yankees offense attempted to rally, but it always felt like a lost cause after the 11-run third inning from the visiting rivals.

The 1998 Yankees were an all-time great time.There's a reason we're doing a daily series about them 25 years later.They won an obscene amount of baseball games.However, even in a historically great season, the Yankees still lost 48 regular season games.Not every game was a banger.On this day in 1998, the Yankees lost a game that was decidedly not a banger.

Good teams find ways to win.When their starter gets lit up, the lineup absolutely batters the opponent's pitching staff to win in a shootout.When the other team's starter has everything working for him, they take advantage of unforced errors to plate a run or two while their own starter twirls a shutout.

Having just passed the quarter-mark of the season, the Yankees were flying high.They strolled into Boston with a five-game winning streak, and though they dropped the series opener, a resounding 12-3 response in the middle game represented a statement of intent that the Yankees were in town not only to win the series, but to pound their opponents into dust in the process.

1921 - Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis officially signs on as baseball commissioner agreeing to a seven-year, $350,000 contract.1938 - Joe DiMaggio rejects a $25,000 offer from the Yankees and counters by asking for $45,000.He will hold out for nearly three months which will end on April 20, just two days before the start of the regular season.

By the time of his deadline trade to the Yankees in 2000, David Justice had already established a reputation as a fearsome slugger who provided timely hits in huge situations in the postseason.His solo home run in Game 6 of the 1995 World Series clinched the title for the Braves while his performances for Cleveland were integral to them reaching the ALCS in consecutive seasons, plus a pennant in 1997.

The hallmark of a great team is blowout wins and close losses, and this series in Boston showed just that for the 1998 Yankees.In their first trip to Fenway Park that season, they dropped a close 5-4 opener to the Red Sox, before rebounding the next day with a blowout.Chuck Knoblauch and Scott Brosius combined to drive in seven runs, but that was only part of the team's output in the big 12-3 win.

Riding another winning streak, this one of the five-game variety, the Yankees headed to Boston for their first matchup of 1998 with the Red Sox.Truthfully, it seemed as though the red-hot rivalry had a cooled a bit at this moment in time.In the decade after losing Game 6 (and subsequently Game 7) of the 1986 World Series, the Red Sox hadn't won a single playoff game.

When two teams meet again the day after brawling, it's hard not to keep a watchful eye on what the aftermath will be.On one hand, that accounts for the backlash of any ill will still in the air.Will any pitcher try and take matters into their own hands and throw inside or at an opposing batter?What will the batter then do if that happens?

For over a year now, it's been clear that Anthony Volpe would be central to the Yankees' future.It was just a matter of time for when he'd be called up, as he had established himself as not only the top prospect in the organization, but one of the best in baseball.Entering spring training 2023, however, it seemed like the 21-year-old was a bit of underdog to make the Opening Day roster.

Team USA's rise to the World Baseball Classic finals is definitely a huge inspiration for this article.The team has three White Sox playing for it, one of which is shortstop Tim Anderson, who has become a mainstay in Team USA's lineup.However, Anderson did not start the first couple of games for his country.

There hasn't been much that Anthony Volpe hasn't done so far in spring training.In nine Grapefruit League game appearances, for the Yankees, Volpe is batting .320with two home runs, three doubles, six runs scored and three stolen bases.And he's been making it more difficult for the Yankees not to keep him with the team when they head back north for opening day later this month.

The Los Angeles Dodgers lost a franchise icon last year when longtime broadcaster Vin Scully passed away at the age of 94.His illustrious career with the organization spanned 67 seasons, from Brooklyn to L.A., and included multiple World Series titles and an endless list of awards.Scully was the soundtrack of baseball for generations of Dodgers fans, including celebrities such as six-time Emmy Award-winning actor Bryan Cranston, who remembered the Hall of Famer during a recent appearance on "Hot Ones."
Cranston recalled some of his favorite Scully quotes, including from Kirk Gibson's walk-off home run in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series and Fernando Valenzuela's no-hitter in 1990.

I can remember the 2001 postseason as if it were yesterday.Like most people of that era, you tend to have a vivid memory of where you were and what your were doing during those months.After September 11th, New York City and its surrounding areas were in this combination of high alert, deep mourning, and trying to find hope in anything.

SAN DIEGO  When Derek Jeter retired, Brian Cashman, the Yankees' general manager, said that the long and time-honored tradition of naming a Yankees captain should be retired with him.That was before Aaron Judge debuted with the team and rose through the pinstriped ranks.Now, as the Yankees close on a record-setting, nine-year, $360 million free-agent deal with Judge, a slugging outfielder, part of his return could include him being named the 16th captain in club history.

I always struggle with the 2001 World Series.For some reason, the series loss doesn't sting the way so many others do.I end up of two minds when I consider the Fall Classic two decades past.On one hand, there is at least one alternate parallel universe where the Yankees won the series, giving them four consecutive World championships and permanently making this iteration of the club one of the greatest dynasties in baseball history, if not in all of sports.

The 2001 season, in hindsight, goes down as the last great hurrah of the late '90s Yankees dynasty.Although they did not win their fourth straight World Series title - a feat that had not been accomplished since the 1949-1953 Yankees won five straight - they sent the 116-win Seattle Mariners packing in five games in the ALCS and went seven games with the Arizona Diamondbacks in a dramatic World Series.

Winter officially begins in a day, but the baseball winter has been ongoing for quite some time.There's been plenty of movement this offseason, and with the A-tier players all off the free agent board now the trade market is going to become the number one focus for many teams still looking for a significant upgrade.

So I wrote last week about this trend of long-term contracts we've seen this season, how teams are content to stick an extra year or two on the end of a deal to lower CBT hits.Over at FanGraphs, Ben Clemens wrote about the financial benefits to teams of stretching out large payouts over more seasons.

After JoseVizcaíno's heroics in Game 1 of the 2000 World Series, the Yankees went up 2-0 before the series shifted crosstown to Shea Stadium.While the Mets fought back with a Game 3 win, the Yankees answered the next day to get on the verge of a third-straight World Series title.Despite the 3-1 lead, pretty much every game had been a close contest.

Even with three rings already to their names, what truly cemented the last Yankees dynasty as one of the greatest teams in baseball history was that 2000 season.In securing the three-peat, that squad became the first since the 1972-74 A's to win the World Series in three consecutive seasons - a feat which had otherwise only been accomplished by those legendary Yankees teams of yesteryear.

The 1998 Yankees are almost certainly the most dominant Yankees team that most of us will see in our lifetimes.Considering that most of us have also seen several other World Series-winning teams, and hopefully will again sometime soon, it's remarkable that they're so clearly ahead.Even as late as June and July, the 2022 Yankees were off to a pace that could've matched what the 1998 team did, and they didn't come close.
