Scientists uncovered the remarkable decision-making ability of this single-celled organism by placing food sources in positions corresponding to cities around Tokyo and observing how the slime mold responded. The slime molds spread out, detecting locally for nutrients and repellents, making local decisions about which direction to go in search of food. Over time, a network of nutrient-carrying tubes emerged that looked remarkably similar to the Tokyo subway system in some places, but was more efficient.
