"One time is enough." That's what I'd heard countless times about visiting Las Vegas before making the trip myself. I'd always wanted to go, if only to have that once-in-a-lifetime experience. Turns out, one time wasn't enough. I've been five times now, and I have no doubt there will be a sixth. The nightlife and gambling aren't what keep me coming back, though. These days, I skip the casinos and explore nature instead - and one of my favorite places is about 45 minutes outside the city: Valley of Fire State Park. There was no turning back once I found a side of Vegas I didn't know I was missing

A smart layout and tons of beginner terrain make this Deep Creek Lake resort a mecca for novices. Take lessons and hone your ski legs in a sequestered learning center by the lower lodge. It's protected by a grove of trees and served by three conveyor carpets that let beginners progress at a comfortable pace. When you're ready, board an adjacent chairlift to the upper lodge area and build skills on seven breezy greens.

Located just an hour's ferry ride off the Southern California coast, Catalina has earned a reputation as the "Caribbean of California" thanks to its bluer-than-blue water, charming beachside resorts, laid-back coastal vibe, and fantastic dining. The island spans a sizable 76 square miles, but the real star here is Avalon Bay, the island's main harbor shaped like a perfect crescent.

Point San Pablo Harbor offers a unique day trip with its rugged beauty, warm-water swimming, friendly locals, and charming atmosphere reminiscent of a post-apocalyptic setting.

Bell Wharf Beach in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex is Time Out's best beach within an hour of London for summer 2025. The quaint stretch of sand is a quick 10 minute walk from Leigh's train station and offers a much quieter alternative to the likes of Brighton Beach and Camber Sands, which tend to get packed with Londoners come summertime.

Windsor is a perfect royal day trip destination, offering lush surroundings and attractions like Windsor Castle and Windsor Great Park, all within a 28-minute train ride from London.

Outdoor movie series are in full swing, showing classic films and new releases, making the Memorial Day Weekend a fantastic way to kick off summer activities.

I paid $15 to take a ferry from downtown Portland, Maine, to nearby Peaks Island. The short ferry ride provided me with great views of Maine and Casco Bay.
