For the first time in twelve years, Germany's women's hockey team will be playing at the Winter Olympics. When Germany last contested the women's hockey event at the Winter Olympics, the team finished third in Group B before securing seventh place courtesy of the 5th-8th place bracket. Since that 2014 Winter Olympics, Germany was relegated and then promoted back to the IIHF Women's World Championship.
At my college back in the day, just as Title IX was being passed, the male athletes were given steak dinners at the cafe the night before big games, especially football, but basketball, and baseball too, but none for female teams. I was a walk-on to our softball team my freshman year, and also worked in the cafeteria to help pay tuition.
Entering Saturday's action, Sweden needed to win by three goals or greater to secure the top place in Group B. Slovakia won its previous two games, and held a commanding divisional lead. Dalibor Dvorsky scored for Slovakia with 39 seconds left, to preserve its entry into the quarterfinal. If Finland defeats Italy in regulation, Slovakia will capture Group B. Any other result, and Sweden will win the group.
The Bruins' center had to be dropped from the Czechia Olympic team roster because of the upper body injury he suffered in the January 29 game against the Philadelphia Flyers. Zacha had held out hope that he would be able to play in the Milan-Cortina Games but on Saturday he had to be replaced on the roster by Filip Chlapik of he Czech Extraliaga.
The Chilean players' association officially became a union in December, and its president, Javiera Moreno, believes there needs to be women's representation in players' unions around the world. We want this movement to become massive, says the former Universidad Catolica captain. Our goal is to spread this to other countries. I don't know if in other places the path will be to have a specific union for women. This was needed here, but I think there needs to be at least representation of women's players within every country's footballers' union.
The women's tournament is already underway, and the buzz in the Olympic village is the norovirus that appears to be making its way through the teams. Finland had to postpone the start of its games, as several of its players went into isolation to start the tournament. The Finns opened the games against the U.S. women on Feb. 7 and promptly lost 5-0, potentially feeling some of the after effects of the illness.
Until late in the contest, it appeared that a second-period goal from O'Neill might be enough to lift the Canadians to gold. O'Neill, playing in her first Olympics, scored her third goal of the tournament less than a minute into the second period, while the U.S. was on a power play. But U.S. star Hilary Knight scored late in the third period to send the game to overtime, and Megan Keller scored the gold-medal-winning goal less than five minutes into the extra period.
70% of the Swiss Olympic women's hockey roster plays their club hockey in Europe, with a good portion of them making their name in the Swiss league. Of the remaining seven players, two play in the PWHL, four are enrolled in collegiate hockey programs in the United States, while one plays in U Sports - Canada's primary postsecondary athletic division.
