Wilyer Abreu expected to be activated while rookie Connelly Early starts; young pitchers have carried the late 2025 Red Sox.
It doesn't take a genius to figure that out, nor do you even have to look at the numbers, but here they are anyway: Since losing Anthony to an oblique injury 10 games ago, the Red Sox sit at 4-6 with a .296 OBP (23rd in all of baseball), along with the third-worst walk rate in the game. Red Sox Connelly Early is set to make his first career start. The Red Sox are set to give another rookie pitcher his MLB debut. Connelly Early, a left-handed starter who was a fifth-round pick by Boston in 2023, is reportedly being called up to make his first career start on Tuesday night against the Athletics. Meanwhile, Red Sox starter Dustin May is set to head to the Injured List per Foul Territory.
But the Kelly promotion feels.... curious among a Worcester pitching staff of guys who have been much more effective, and we know from earlier in the year that he's going to be hit around. Enter a Connelly Early start Tuesday that would have some (hi, it's me, I'm some) questioning the formation of this pitching staff. Even if the possibility of promoting Early leads to there being too much youth on this team, it's better to evaluate them rather than blow
