The conference finals are almost underway, and sadly for San Jose Sharks fans, their team did not come close to reaching that round this season.Instead, the Sharks missed the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season and are still a few years away from contending for their sixth Western Conference Final appearance.

In light of the upcoming 2023 NHL Awards and the finalists just being announced, we're going to take a look back over the past decade at players who could and probably should have won certain trophies, but lost out due to where they played (lack of exposure) or voters just making the popular choice.

The NHL has begun rolling out the finalists for each of its major awards, with several nominees already announced.As a first-year member of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association, Yahoo Sports was not granted an official ballot this year, but that doesn't mean we can't get in on the fun.Stay tuned for updates throughout the week as the nominees are unveiled, culminating with the Hart Trophy on Friday, May 12.

The Canes are moving on after a 3-2 overtime win against the Devils in game 6 a t the PNC Arena.Carolina forward Jesper Fast scored 7:00 into overtime to send the Devils packing.An impressive round against a similar opponent for the Hurricanes.

The Carolina Hurricanes were unable to eliminate the New York Islanders earlier this week, but in Game 6, they punched their ticket to round two.This was another low-scoring game between two elite defensive teams.New York got on the board first and maintained a 1-0 lead for about two full periods.It wasn't until the third frame was halfway over that the Hurricanes evened things up.
