Author Kyle Lukoff's 2019 children's book - the first in a series of picture books about the title character - follows a young transgender boy's coming-out journey at school and eventually to his parents. As public radio station WFDD notes, the book is the only one of the nearly 20,000 books in the library's children's collection to so much as mention gender identity.

An entire library board in North Carolina has disbanded over a single trans book. The Randolph County Board of Commissioners dissolved its nine-member library board over a picture book about a trans boy, which initially caused backlash because it was located in the children's section. County spokesperson Amy Rudisill said the governing body for the county made the 3-2 decision earlier this week, hearing from about 40 people.

"Innumerable themes may be 'contrary to the religious principles' that parents 'wish to instill in their children,'" wrote Justice Sotomayor in dissent.

The Netflix adaptation of Judy Blume's 'Forever...', created by Mara Brock Akil, treats the original material with sensitivity while allowing the story to resonate in a new medium.
