Fragments of a rare space rock type called aubrites have been recovered from a meteorite that exploded over Germany.

Only 11 examples of aubrite meteorite falls had been found on Earth prior to this discovery.

The aubrite meteorites are believed to represent just 1% of known meteorites and likely came from the inner side of the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

Rare meteorites, called aubrites, were recovered outside Berlin in January.

Aubrites make up only about 1 in 10,000 recovered meteorites and are highly unusual in their composition.
