Miami is a hotbed for avant-garde fashion, design, and art, which is why people flock to the tip of the Florida peninsula every year to navigate the crowds at Art Basel and Design Miami. History buffs can explore architecture from the 1920s at the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, stroll the Deering Estate house museum, or study up on Miami's urban and environmental design at the Coral Gables Museum.

This year, more than 300 sites are participating in the action-packed weekend, which will take place from Friday, Oct. 17 through Sunday, Oct. 19. Experiences run the gamut from kayak trips of New York's waterways to behind-the-scenes municipal operations to historic house tours. Due to space or security concerns, some sites require advance tickets, while others are open for drop-in visits. (Ticketing for sites that require them opens on Friday, Oct. 3 at noon . Act fast, they go quickly!)

Inspired by the ethereal elegance of natural systems-coral, roots, jellyfish, diatoms-these works reflect my fascination with the subtle, intelligent structures of the natural world.
