A fire damaged one of Oakland's most beloved historic landmarks, raising concerns about the preservation of the city's cultural heritage and the impact on the community.
"Who is making up these advanced courses, and are they truly equivalent, or are we just giving them an equivalent weight?" said Democratic state representative Felicia Simone Robinson. "Because if we are, and this is a course that we're just making up for Florida and it's not necessarily equivalent to the AP and IB courses, then we're putting our students at a disadvantage when they're trying to compete against other students in the United States."

Ontario's education minister placed a seventh school board under supervision Wednesday in order to prevent dozens of teachers from being laid off, he says, and he is planning to soon take control of another board over financial concerns. Paul Calandra announced that he has put Peel District School Board under supervision and is giving the York Catholic District School Board two weeks to make a case for avoiding the same fate.
In a telephone interview Thursday, Broward County Commissioner Lamar Fisher, who serves on the SFRTA board, told the South Florida Sun Sentinel the resignation was not a surprise to the 10-member board as Dech informed them earlier this month he was in talks to become president and general manager of the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District.
Of course, anything can become controversial simply by virtue of somebody objecting. I wouldn't encourage anyone to do this-heaven forbid-but hypothetically, someone could loudly object to discussions of capitalism, traditional gender roles, law enforcement or even the Trump administration, thereby making them "controversial" and out of bounds. After all, objections can come from the left as well as the right. A few well-orchestrated rounds of public objection could highlight the absurdity of the law pretty quickly.
While community college advocates argued the lower-cost degrees would benefit students in a state with vast rural expanses and education deserts, private universities countered that community colleges are stepping out of bounds and infringing on their territory. Greg Steinke, the president of the Iowa Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, even went so far as to say the move could put some institutions out of business, telling lawmakers a few weeks ago that "without any question and without any doubt," if the bill passed, "some of our private colleges will close."
On a chilly day before Christmas, Teresa Rivas helped a tween boy pick out a new winter coat. "Get the bigger one, the one with the waterproof layer, mijo," she said, before helping him pull it onto his string-bean frame. Rivas provides guidance counseling at Owen Goodnight Middle School in San Marcos, Texas. She talks with students about their goals and helps if they're struggling in class. She's also a trained navigator placed there by a nonprofit called Communities in Schools.
It's long overdue that we modernize the management of our educational system, Newsom said, and so in the budget I'll be submitting tomorrow, I'm proposing that we unify the policymaking by the State Board of Education and the Department of Education, allowing the State Superintendent of Public Instruction to align our education policies from early childhood through college. The budget's passage on this was longer, but still failed to explicitly say what Newsom had in mind.
Teachers have almost no authority over student behaviors or academic grading, and are given little, if any, respect from administrators, parents or even students. Instead, students have all the authority but no responsibility for their success. Students do (or don't do) whatever they wish, while empty-handed teachers are left to take the blame. Teachers no longer have the ultimate tool of flunking students.
Los Alto School District board trustee Vladimir Ivanovic is resigning in protest over the district's plan to build a new campus for Bullis charter school, a move he believes will impose a large tax burden on residents and jeopardize future bond measures. The long-time trustee announced his decision at the board's meeting on Jan. 12, and submitted his resignation letter. Ivanovic, whose four-year term was set to expire in December, will stay in the position until March 11.
A group of students who are eager to learn about advanced math are asking for multivariable calculus, and teacher Daniel Nguyen has obtained a master's degree in order to teach it. The school board told Paly to add the class on Dec. 16, but the teachers council said no. Apparently the school is run by a committee of teachers, called the council of administrators and instructors, who oppose adding the class.

These numbers look stark, but in context they reveal far more about the conditions California children are growing up in than the quality of classroom instruction. California educates a disproportionate share of children experiencing housing insecurity. A 2024 analysis found that 4% of California students were homeless, with some counties reaching 16%. The California Department of Education reports 230,443 homeless students statewide, a 26% increase over five years that mirrors broader trends in affordability, overcrowding and displacement.
