Having Tommy Kahnle is good for a few reasons.First, purely, it's good to have good pitchers, and with an injured list that already includes so many names, the Yankees will need Kahnle to play a key role.We already touched on that along with his return a few weeks ago, and time since, there hasn't been much reason to believe that's any less true.

At this time on Tuesday, I was fully prepared to write the case for Anthony Volpe to be optioned to Scranton, work on his swing decisions in a lower stakes environment, and target a return to the big league team after 50 or so games with the Railriders.I can still probably make that argument, that that's best for his long term development, but with Hal Steinbrenner, Aaron Boone and the rest of the Yankee brain trust coming out and saying that Volpe is the guy and won't be optioned, we must focus on what is, not what we wish to be.

In a game featuring a starting pitching matchup of Gerrit Cole and Justin Verlander, we got a pretty impressive pitching battle.Through the first six innings, Cole and Verlander were very good, putting up similar lines.Cole allowed one run on four hits in six innings, as he struck out eight batters.

Willie Calhoun is a crucial part of the Yankees' offense right now.I can't believe I'm saying that in 2023 (!) but it's not like it isn't true.He hardly strikes out, hits for decent power, and has tagged a few clutch hits when the rest of the team has been nearly silent.Even though I wrote about this earlier in the week, I'm still surprised!

Peraza himself is close to graduating from the list and has been tearing up Triple-A, so it's only a matter of time until Domínguez reigns alone as the organization's top prospect.

It is very strange that it has taken so long in 2023 for us to get the first edition of Yankees vs. Red Sox.For the record, I'm not complaining.These games always feel extra stressful for all parties involved, and 19 times is just too many against one opponent.I was a big fan of MLB balancing the schedule a little bit more, and another huge change for 2023 is sure to have an impact on these showdowns too: the pitch clock.

The Dodgers (35-24) went 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position in the 6-3 loss to the Yankees (35-25) Saturday evening at Dodger Stadium.The Yankees once again flexed their power with four home runs to tie up the series against the Dodgers.Outside of the two bad pitches Grove cruised over the plate to Jake Bauers, his velocity was surprisingly way up in his return from the injured list.

On August 1, 2022, the Yankees sought to boost their rotation and bullpen by making a trade with the Oakland A's.They acquired starter Frankie Montas and reliever Lou Trivino for a package of four prospects, headlined by Ken Waldichuk and Luis Medina.Montas made eight bad starts down the stretch, appeared in one playoff inning, and hasn't taken the mound in 2023 due to shoulder surgery that will keep him out until August at the absolute earliest.

Opening Day is nearly upon us, and the Yankees are in the process of finalizing their 26-man team in wake of the several injuries that have hit them this spring.Tommy Kahnle and Lou Trivino's absences in particular made the bullpen unclear, not to mention both Clarke Schmidt and Domingo Germán moving up from long reliever roles into the starting rotation.

Gerrit Cole was unlikely to go the entire season without surrendering a home run.That does not make the recent surge in balls leaving the park against him any less alarming.If it weren't for Aaron Judge's historic home run chase last season, the dominant storyline of the campaign would've regarded Cole's propensity for giving up home runs.

Since his tenure as skipper began in 2018, Aaron Boone has been prone to receiving the heave-ho.Just last week, the Yankees' sixth-year manager was ejected for the second time in four days and the third time in 10 games, earning him a one-game suspension.Say what you will about his in-game strategy and postseason track record, but Boone certainly seems willing to stand up for his players.

MiLB.com | Matt Kardos: Three Yankees made rehab appearances with Double-A Somerset yesterday, and at least two of them seem like good bets to return to the bigs when the Yankees fly to Los Angeles on Friday for a weekend set with the Dodgers.Third baseman Josh Donaldson and reliever Tommy Kahnle have played in multiple rehab games over the past week and told Kardos that assuming all goes well in the next couple days, they plan to rejoin the Yankees in LA.

The Yankees ' offense had not been a strong point in recent games.Even in Saturday's win, they only scored three, and they had only put up five runs total in their previous three games.In Sunday's series finale against the Padres, the offense was not an issue.The lineup put up seven runs in the third inning alone, and cracked double digits for the first time in a couple weeks (a month if you're not counting outbursts against hapless Oakland arms).

Luis Severino is back again, y'all.And the stuff looks intact!He managed to get through nearly five innings with just 75 pitches to work with, and more importantly than seeing just a high-velocity fastball or the nasty slider movement by itself, he seemed to have his full arsenal intact.Sevy worked with all the weapons that he usually has to put hitters away three times in a game.

New York Daily News | Gary Phillips: After spending the last few months down in Tampa, Carlos Rodón has rejoined the Yankees in New York as he continues to recover from a balky back.The latest news on that front is good news, as the lefty played catch and made throws up to 120 feet at Yankee Stadium yesterday.

After nearly seven months, Luis Severino made his triumphant return to an MLB mound.He may not have gotten the decision, but his impressive efforts put the Yankees in prime position to wrap up the win over the Reds for their second sweep of the season.He was on a strict 75 pitch limit, but boy did he flash some encouraging signs in that sample of pitches.

It's been a busy week for the Yankees!After taking three games out of four North of the Border, the team traveled to Cincinnati and swept the Reds to end their road trip and 17 straight days of games on a high note before finally getting the day off today.A 6-1 record over the past week was good enough to properly move them away from last place and into third in the divisional standings; hopefully they continue to climb higher in the upcoming week.

This is the first time I'm featuring Aaron Judge in the at-bat of the week this year.There really isn't much to read into on it, but it is still surprising it's taken this long.Some of it has to do with never being surprised by anything he does anymore, and the other part is because other players have been hitting quite well!

ESPN | Joon Lee: The Yankees have been going through rough waters already with their offense, and it wasn't alleviated when Aaron Judge had to exit a game a day after taking a hard slide into third base on a steal attempt.Aaron Boone told the media that Judge was dealing with a hip injury and was waiting to see if it was a day-to-day deal, but they ultimately bit the bullet and placed him on the 10-day IL retroactive to April 28th.

This spring training for Yankees fans has been one full of excitement.From "The Martian" blasting home runs left and right (he got on base, too) to other prospects like Andrés Chaparro and players like Willie Calhoun leaving their marks as well.However, the 2023 spring training games have been defined by performances from the team's top two shortstop prospects, Anthony Volpe and Oswald Peraza.
