Seven villagers from local villages entered a cave in Xaisomboun province on May 19 to search for gold. Heavy rain triggered flash flooding that blocked the exit and trapped seven people. Rescuers from Laos and Thailand conducted a recovery operation that included Thai experts with experience from the 2018 youth soccer cave rescue. On Wednesday, rescuers reported finding five people alive and safe after divers emerged and discovered the trapped villagers. Rescue teams stated that two people were still missing and that the search would continue. A video showed villagers sitting on a rock surrounded by floodwater with headlamps as divers reached them.
""We've found 5 people alive and all safe. There are still 2 people we are searching for," Rescue Volunteer for People said on social media. "I'm still shaking. Our team made it happen," Bounkham Luanglath, who works with the Lao rescue group, told the Associated Press news agency via a voice note."
