Google Maps gets Gemini-powered Ask Maps and Immersive Navigation
"Google says Gemini can answer 'complex, real-world questions a map could never answer before'. You can literally ask for anything - a place to charge your phone, a public tennis court with lights are only two examples Google gives. Just tap the Ask Maps button and ask away."
"Gemini in Maps analyzes information from over 300 million places, including reviews from the 500 million-strong Maps community. The results are personalized based on places you've searched for in the past, or saved in Maps, so you can get the most relevant recommendations."
"This 'spatial understanding of your route' is 'made possible with help from Gemini models', Google says. They analyze fresh, real-world imagery from Street View and aerial photos to give you an accurate view of things along your route."
Google has expanded Gemini's integration into Maps by introducing Ask Maps, a conversational feature allowing users to ask complex questions about any location. The system analyzes data from over 300 million places and 500 million user reviews to provide personalized recommendations based on search history and saved locations. Users can inquire about specific amenities like phone charging stations or lit tennis courts, then book reservations, save places, or share recommendations. Additionally, Google launched Immersive Navigation, described as the largest Maps update in over a decade, featuring redesigned 3D visuals showing buildings, terrain, and street-level details like lanes and traffic lights. The navigation uses Gemini models to analyze Street View and aerial imagery, providing spatial route understanding with smart zooming, transparent buildings, and natural voice guidance including alternate route tradeoffs.
