Athena Lunar Landing Mission Goes Sideways on the Moon
Briefly

Intuitive Machines experienced another setback as its lunar lander Athena tipped over during a landing attempt near the south pole on March 6, 2025. The lander fell into a crater, unable to generate power due to its position and the harsh lunar conditions. Although the mission is declared over, the company noted it achieved a significant milestone as the first to land in the southernmost region of the moon. Teams will continue to analyze data collected during this attempt, highlighting both the challenges and accomplishments of private space exploration.
For the second time in as many years, a private Intuitive Machines lunar lander has tipped over on the moon. The spacecraft attempted a historic landing in rugged terrain near the south pole on March 6.
Intuitive Machines declared its mission over, stating that the lander, unable to generate power due to its orientation and extreme cold temperatures, would not recharge.
Despite the setback, Intuitive Machines celebrated Athena's landing in the southernmost region ever reached on the moon, showcasing the achievement despite the mission's conclusion.
The photo taken by Athena post-landing shows the Earth half-lit above the moon's horizon, with the lander unable to function because of its tipped position.
