Work to upgrade Pontoon Dock DLR station to start later this year
"The station needs upgrades to handle projected passenger demand as new housing is built nearby, but the current design wouldn't be able to accommodate it. The main problem is that the station is elevated high above the streets but has a long staircase to use. As a result, the two lifts are under unusually high use as people understandably avoid the stairs. That means the lifts are also often in need of repairs due to their higher-than-average use."
"When completed, the upgrade will feature six new escalators - two from the street to a larger mezzanine level and four to the platforms. There will also be enhancements to the surrounding area, including improved public spaces, landscaping, and a small retail outlet that's likely to become a coffee shop. Outline planning permission was granted in 2024, and the contractor, Morgan Sindall, has since been appointed to complete the detailed design and deliver the station upgrade."
Construction work to upgrade Pontoon Dock DLR station is due to begin later this year, with outline planning permission granted in 2024 and Morgan Sindall appointed as contractor. The elevated station relies heavily on two lifts because a long staircase deters many passengers, causing frequent lift repairs. The upgrade will add six escalators, expand a mezzanine level, and improve public spaces, landscaping, and a small retail unit likely to become a coffee shop. Initial site setup and early structural works run June 2026–July 2027, including asset clearance, cladding removal, removal of buried concrete and redundant utilities, drainage installation and unexploded WWII bomb checks. Foundation piling, steel frame erection and canopy removal will precede main construction from May 2027 to July 2028, with escalator installation between July 2027 and April 2028.
