Melfield Gardens development in Lewisham includes 30 affordable homes for people aged over 55 and two flats for Goldsmiths students, promoting intergenerational living. Students contribute to the community by volunteering in exchange for lower rent. Phoenix Community Housing aims to enhance the wellbeing of residents while addressing loneliness and isolation among older individuals. The development adheres to the Passivhaus standard, ensuring energy efficiency with high insulation, reducing fuel poverty, and contributing to climate change solutions. The project also frees up larger homes for families in need.
The Passivhaus standard development consists of 30 affordable homes for people aged over 55, and two flats for Goldsmiths students. Phoenix Community Housing celebrates this sustainable initiative.
Phoenix Community Housing chief executive, Denise Fowler, stated that the Passivhaus homes are the most sustainable they've built and the intergenerational nature will support residents' wellbeing.
Many of the residents who have moved into the new homes were previously living in larger properties, which is freeing up homes for families who desperately need them.
This standard means the homes have high levels of insulation, resulting in comfortable living conditions and lower energy bills, while tackling fuel poverty and climate change.
