The Outsider: Bamboo and Lush Containers in Bed Stuy
""There's no surefire way to control it. Those roots will continue to burrow. We could have moderate but not guaranteed success.""
""As things evolved, I had to agree, it's incredible, the height of that stuff and the level of screening.""
""We decided to keep the concrete, then layered a drainable mat and filter fabric, and put a 2-3″ deep layer of decorative pea gravel on it.""
""We had to go thick, because the bamboo stems are so powerful and strong. To hold it back securely, we needed material that wouldn't bow out.""
A client desired a garden for reading and entertaining, leading to a design featuring bamboo and vibrant pots on pea gravel. The landscape architect, Liz Pulver, faced challenges with aggressive bamboo from a neighbor's yard. Instead of removing it, she embraced its height and screening benefits. The project transformed a concrete-paved area into a lush space while maintaining drainage. To control the bamboo, Pulver implemented strong metal braces along the fence, ensuring stability against the powerful bamboo stems.
