Designing outdoor spaces should prioritize high-quality furnishings and a cohesive color palette that complements the indoor areas. Location, size, and purpose of the space are essential considerations when crafting a layout. For smaller patios, multi-functional furniture is recommended to optimize space. Designers suggest using items like storage cocktail tables and ottomans that double as side tables, ensuring that outdoor spaces remain functional and welcoming for gatherings, even as design rules are more flexible than indoors.
"The goal is to source items that are higher quality, so they last," says designer Jessica Reynaud, owner of Jessica Reynaud Design.
"In all cases, several things must be considered: location, size, and purpose," says Juliana Ewer, owner and lead designer of J Squared Home Designs.
"It's a good idea to keep the color palette similar to the indoor space, especially if it flows directly into the outdoors for entertaining. This provides cohesiveness as the design flows outside."
"Seek out a cocktail table that has storage for additional blankets and accessories that need to be stored during a storm," she says. "Ottomans that can also act as side tables for drinks can be very useful in tight spaces."
